Applaud – 2009 – A Reflection on a Year of Positive Change

Posted in Uncategorized by Administrator on the December 30th, 2009

The last year started out with Applaud as Applaud Magazine, in print for the 6th year. As with many other print magazines things looked pretty bleak. Postage and printing costs had been rising for years and with a bad economy advertising revenue had sunk to the lowest level since I created the magazine in 2002. However, I am lucky to be doing something that I am passionate about; lucky that I enjoy learning new things and that I’m stubborn. I don’t like to give up. I think the businesses who are open minded and pay attention to new trends are the ones who will survive. Again, I am lucky that the trend is a shift to the internet for information, which is what I have to offer and in the use of social networking to market businesses. Another lucky thing for me was that I had already decided that 2009 was going to be a change for me, rather a positive change. That decision lead to the creation of a brand new website to house our on-line publication for women in NH and northern MA.

Although I have never designed a website before I was able to find a user-friendly software and use my design skills to accomplish this task. Once the website was designed it opened up a whole new world allowing me to offer a huge amount of information for local women, a whole new community with listings of restaurants throughout NH and MA; Hotels in NH (MA will be added in 2010); A massive Wedding Resource Center; Our female doctor listing for NH & MA (making it easier for local women to find the female doctors available in their area); Seasonal activities; and finally our Women Biz directory. In addition we have a number of informational pages with articles relating to Beauty, Health, Fashion, Celebrities and tons more. Many of the information pages have RSS feeds from either local or national websites. The new concept is for local women to find everything they need in one place, making it easier and quicker for them to find the information they need or want to find. Last year we were Applaud Magazine, one small vehicle providing local women with a fraction of the information that we are now able to provide them on Applaud Women. What a huge difference from this time last year!

So my advice for those of you who have had a tough year is to keep your mind open; know when you need to make a change and if you love what you’re doing – don’t quit.

No More Suffering in Silence — There is help for Incontinence by By Veronica Triaca of Concord Hospital, Concord NH

Urinary incontinence is a hidden epidemic that consumes billions of dollars in health care expenditures annually. Defined as the involuntary leakage of urine, incontinence is more common among women than men. Unfortunately, fewer than 50% of women affected by incontinence seek treatment. There are several different types of urinary incontinence: stress incontinence (SUI) is urinary leakage that occurs with coughing, sneezing or engaging in any activity; urge incontinence (UI) is urinary leakage that occurs with a sudden uncontrollable urge to urinate; both forms can coexist. Overflow incontinence typically occurs with the inability to completely empty ones bladder which results in continued filling and subsequent leakage….For the rest of the article go to the Fall issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Applaud Women – Fall Issue – Transforming Your Mindless Munch

Transforming Your Mindless Munch by Susan Miccele of Present Moments Coaching at www.presentinthemoment.com

Popcorn is my downfall. Just the thought of the hot air popper shooting popcorn into my oversized bowl and the dogs scrambling for the stray pieces gets my mouth watering. It’s a routine, a habit. Popcorn drizzled with warm butter, salt, my comfy couch and a movie. I would mindlessly shove handful after handful into my mouth, not noticing, or tasting, until the bowl was empty. A second helping would already be popping before the first was gone. The challenge is to be able to make the second bowl last until the movie ended. It never happens……For the rest of the article go to the Fall issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Applaud Women – Fall Issue – Vitamin D Deficiency, Health Risk

Posted in Uncategorized by Administrator on the December 2nd, 2009

Vitamin D: Low Levels can be a Health Risk by Dr. Jennifer Warren.

Vitamin D deficiency has become the “hot topic” in the news lately — and for good reason. There is mounting evidence that low levels of vitamin D may be associated with increased risk of obesity, weight gain around the waist, cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, type I and type II diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, muscle and joint pain, certain cancers, autoimmune diseases, fatigue and depression, and other diseases, along with the more well-known problem with bone density, osteoporosis. Recent studies have also suggested that low levels of vitamin D may be linked to greater susceptibility to viruses such as colds and flu. It is no surprise that more physicians are on the lookout for this deficiency, and you may hear about vitamin D at your next checkup. …For the rest of the article go to the Fall issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com.
