Posted in Uncategorized by Administrator on the August 14th, 2009

This vaccine is called Gardasil® and has been available since the spring of 2006. HPV is a virus that is spread by skin to skin contact, most commonly via sexual contact. It is the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in the nation. It is estimated that up to 80% of sexually active persons will be infected with this virus. There are high grade strains and low grade strains. The high grade strains are those that can lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, penis and anus. Nearly 4,000 women die yearly in the United States from cervical cancer. The low grade represent those that can lead to ano-genital warts.

An Inspirational NH Women – Leslie Sturgeon – Networking Guru

Posted in Uncategorized by Administrator on the August 13th, 2009

When Applaud Magazine was created almost 7 years ago the most important feature of the magazine

was our Inspirational women articles. Most of the women featured are from New Hampshire or Massachusetts. Occasionally we featured a woman who provided a very unique type of inspiration who did not live in our area. Now that we have transitioned to the strictly on-line publication, Applaud Women, we are very excited that we can offer even more inspirational women articles in each issue. I am including an excerpt from the article about Leslie Sturgeon here. –

Wow! “If you need something done, ask a busy person” hugely understates Leslie Sturgeon’s amazing capacity to out perform on whatever project she shines her attention. Filled with enthusiasm, a keen attention to detail, determination, and genuine desire to motivate other women, Leslie truly is an Inspiring Woman in New Hampshire.

Living in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Leslie noticed an absence of a support network for women. She met with women informally to discuss the challenges they face integrating their professional and personal lives and decided to create Women Inspiring Women (WIW).

Rainy Day Activities for Parents & Children

Posted in Uncategorized by Administrator on the August 11th, 2009

Here is an article by Angela Hughes – Mom Extraordinaire. Angela writes a column for parents in each issue of Applaud Women. Since we have had so much rain over the summer we thought this would be a helpful article for parents to read. Here is one of the activities that Angela has suggested.

Papier-Mache Globe

Papier-Mache Globe

1. Make a Paper Mache World Globe and label it. There isn’t a kid around that doesn’t like to get their hands sticky with a glue paste and ripped up newspaper. This craft is fun to paint and even more fun to make.

Supplies needed:

A round balloon
Lots of newspaper
Flour and water glue (instructions below)
A container for mixing the glue (old plastic containers work well)
A spoon or stick to stir the glue
A printer
Pencil
Blue and green tempera paint
Paint brushes
A dark marker

Make simple, thin glue from flour and water. Mix 1 cup of flour into 1 cup of water until the mixture is thin and runny. Stir into 4 cups of boiling water (the heating gives the
glue a nice consistency, but is not
necessary).

Simmer for about 3 minutes, and then cool.

Tear a lot of strips of newspaper.

Strips should be about 1 inch wide; the length doesn’t really matter.

Blow up and tie a round balloon for each student.

Papier-Mâché: Dip each strip of paper in the flour glue, wipe off excess, and wrap the strip around the balloon. Have at least three layers surrounding the balloon. Let it dry (at least overnight) after each layer.

Let the globe dry completely (it may take a few days). When the papier-mâché is dry, the balloon usually pops by itself, and separates from the outer papier-mâché skin.
Paint the globe with tempura paints and label accordingly.

Here is the beginning paragraph –

In your search for Mr. Right, have you ever stopped to consider who you are being in this search? When you look at who you are and the why of it, it helps you to act from a place of intention. This is helpful in both everyday life and particular situations. There are several parts of your being from which you can act. The core of you is your tick. What makes you tick is synergy of your purpose and passions. When you know what excites you from the deepest level and understand the reason for your existence, you are powerful in your intentions and you are aligned with your source.

Inspirational Massachusetts Women – Cheryl Richardson

Posted in Uncategorized by Administrator on the August 7th, 2009

Each issue Applaud interviews women that we think are inspirational. We usually choose a woman local to New Hampshire or Massachusetts. Occasionally we find a celebrity or just a woman with a great story who is not local. In our summer issue one of the woman we have chosen to feature is Cheryl Richardson, best selling author and Self Care guru. In the past year Cheryl has been on the Oprah show and traveled with her on her Giveway tour. Cheryl is a remarkable woman who proves that when you follow your passion you can achieve great things.

Here is the beginning of our article about her. To read the complete article just got to our website at www.applaudwomen.com, click on the summer cover image, turn the pages, print or download the entire publication.

What a successful woman. What an inspirational woman. What a real woman.

Although her words and advice have helped millions of people change their lives in positive ways, Cheryl Richardson does not pretend to be perfect as she honestly shares her life-experiences and strategies. That may precisely be why she empowers so many people and has become such a huge success as a life-coach.

“What you see is what you get and I’ve always been that way,” says Cheryl in an interview with Applaud. “I believe very much in walking your talk and in being transparent—and when you’re transparent, you’ve got nothing to hide.”

Female Docs. in Manchester, NH & Surrounding areas

Posted in Uncategorized by Administrator on the August 7th, 2009

When I created Applaud Magazine 7 years ago it was my believe that women would prefer to have a female doctor. I also felt that women doctors were more motivated to help their patients then to promote themselves and in fact, they did appear to get less visibility then their male counterparts. So I created the Female Doctor listing which was included in our Fall issue each year.

Applaud magazine is no longer in print but Applaud Women now provides a quarterly publication for local women readers. We are now working on our Fall issue and will include our female doctor listing. Because this is something that we are really passionate about we have also created a separate web page with a listing of female doctors. We now have most of Manchester, NH and the surrounding areas listed. So if you are looking for a female doctor from Londonderry to Hooksett and over to Raymond you should be able to locate one here. So just go to our new website at www.applaudwomen.com and click on the Female Doctor page. If you have any problems please feel free to email me at applaud@comcast.net.

We are currently looking for health related articles for the Fall issue. I believe that we are the only local publication that allows our advertisers to write editorial relevant to their expertise. This is a wonderful way to establish a relationship with our readers, share your expertise and see yourself in print. Again, if you are interested please email me or call 603-895-4699.
